On Thursday, March 16, the track team competed in a developmental meet at home. The meet included Rockledge, Titusville, Merrit Island, and Satellite.

Events began at 4:30, starting mainly with field events first. Boys Discus was up first on the grassy area in the middle of the track. Junior Chace Gadapee was in the first of two waves of competition. “We start with three warm up throws and then three actual throws. I usually only take two throws to warm up, the first one to I go about half way to get ready and then by the second one I go all out. After that I feel pretty good and ready to compete,” Chace said.

Chace came in first and set a personal record for the second home meet in a row. Sophomore Spencer Walker came in second in discus.

While the boys discus competition is underway, boys pole vaulting is beginning to warm up on the grassy area between the track and the softball field. The boys warm up with run-throughs where they make sure they are getting their steps right. During warm ups they jump without a bar to go over just to get a feel of what they are doing. Once warm ups are through the bar is set at 6’6”. Each time that the athletes clear the bar it increases six inches. For junior Jason Garrett the focus at this meet is just to see what kind of potential he has for the event.

“I have never done pole vaulting before so this meet is my first time competing. Right now my personal record is 7’0” because that is what I have cleared so far,” Jason said.

The meet is a developmental meet so the main purpose is to let the athletes have practice in a competitive setting to get ready for the bigger meets that are still to come in the season.
