Hurricane Mathew, first predicted to be a category 4 storm that would hit the east coast of Florida. The 130-150 mph winds would hit close to home, just off the coast of Brevard county. Many members of the community prepared for the storm by boarding up windows, gathering supplies and even evacuating.

“When I heard it was a category 4, I got scared for my friends and family. I was also worried about the damage the storm would bring,” junior Camryn Aton, said.

The community continued to remain strong and helpful during this fearful time. As the storm grew closer to Brevard county it traveled about 20 miles to the east and decreased to a category 3. Still capable of causing damage but not a direct hit.

“It was good that it moved away from Titusville because it could have caused a lot more damage than it did,” sophomore Sierra Howard, said.

Luckily, the hurricane did not cause to much destruction; people were left with torn down fences, broken power lines, and fallen trees. However, there were still after effects of the storm that greatly impacted the community. Many were left without power all throughout Brevard county.

“I was left without power for at least a week during and after the storm. It was an adjustment because my family had to use candles and other light sources in order to see. Also we had to go without air conditioning. It was very hot and uncomfortable at night,” junior Laith Hatoum, said.

Many of the students and staff members at Astronaut were strongly affected by hurricane Mathew due to the loss of power that followed the storm. However, during these dangerous times, the community has continued to remain strong and proactive.
